Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow. I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd [sic] from1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.
Cheers, Phil

Climatic Research UnitIn the 1970’s, when global cooling alarms were all the rage, Gilda Radner created her character, Emily Latilla, for Saturday Night Live. Ms. Latilla was a take off on that durable literary character, Mrs. Malaprop who was famous for saying things that almost made sense. Gilda’s Emily managed to hear things a little wrong. She came on the Weekend News to rail against “Violins on Television”, the “Eagle Rights Amendment”, and why everyone so concerned about “Natural Racehorses”. Jane Curtin would intone that the concerns were about “violence on television”, the “Equal Rights Amendment” and “natural resources”. In character, Emily would gather herself together and thoroughly chastened she would intone right back, “Never Mind”.
I’m not sure how to turn “Human Causation of either Global Warming or Climate Change” into a Malaprop, but the discovery of scientific shenanigans at the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia certainly ranks as the find of our new century, equivalent to Monica Lewinsky’s Blue Dress or the implications behind the missing 18 minutes of Richard Nixon’s White House tapes. Many scientists have called into question the so-called “consensus” of anthropogenic (i.e., “human caused”) global warming, but finally we have the smoking gun that shows faked research, altered data, and conspiracy among the “peers” charged with reviewing the integrity of scientific tracts.
While many in the fellow-travelling press have simply ignored these developments, the perpetrators of the hoax, including Prof. Jones, have admitted to the veracity of the e-mails. This would be an “Emily Latilla Moment”, if we weren’t on the precipice of a disastrous re-ordering of society and re-programming of individuals, all to “save the planet”.
At this point, I’m at a bit of a loss. Like many, I’ve often wondered how the media, prominent politicians, and the public have been taken in by the “Global Warming” crowd, but now we see the machinations of what can only be called a conspiracy laid bare.
Often thoughtful and sincere people have challenged my understanding of the situation, citing “peer reviewed studies” and various “objective facts”. Here, though, we have evidence of peers conspiring to put forth a singular point of view. Here, we have discussions of how to marginalize other journals, scientists and researchers in order to enforce a rigid and unscientific orthodoxy. Here we scientists hewing to a given “truth” in order to be in line for millions in grants and laurels of prestige, just as long as they preach the Anthropogenic gospel.
This story is going to play out, hopefully, to free us of the scare tactics and silliness of global warming alarmists. While European governments have been giving sizable interventionist lip service to this fabulous construct for a decade, when push is coming to shove, even they have been reluctant to turn their economies and societies over to rampant extremism. After Chinese leaders pulled Barack Obama aside during his trip to Asia, perhaps their counsel has begun to sober him up as well regarding the more expensive and destructive portions of his plans regarding healthcare, de-privatization, and cap and trade policies.
Given the current economic slowdown, it is clear that the enthusiasm for permanently consigning the West to sackcloth and ashes has been on the wane. As the planet has stubbornly refused to warm, despite the clever computer models of scientists with agendas, economic realities have given world leaders pause prior to their upcoming “Climate Summit” in Copenhagen.
It’s been all fun and games to throw down cocktails with the Hollywood elite and talk earnestly in self-flagellating tones about how wasteful and greedy we all are. Like mother said, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Now that the waiter begins handing out the tabs for reducing carbon footprints and further shutting down whole economies in terms of wealth, jobs and hope, there is a growing consensus for change.
The Global Warming Scare has hurt the world is many important ways, but it falls into two camps. First, it has hurt the environment. The phony concern over Global Warming, which was meant to rein in human needs and desires, has lifted eyes away from real threats, mainly in the developing world for real toxins and pollution. This concern is growing, and not just because of the newly revealed fraud. The follow on to the cultural hit “Freakonomics” is now out, called “Super Freakonomics”. Sit down (as I did) and just read the chapter on global warming. Follow the bouncing logical ball on how carbon dioxide is not an “emission”, on how other gasses, such as methane and water vapor, are much stronger “greenhouse” gasses, and how we might be able to regulate the planet’s temperature. Of course, if such cooling were desirable.
Here’s your subversive thought for the day. Remember when fuel cells were all the rage? Hydrogen and oxygen were to be combined to make electricity to power our cars and the “only” emission was going to be water vapor. If water vapor is many times more powerful of a greenhouse gas, what have we done by removing a little bit of carbon dioxide?
All the supposed human-caused global warming that’s been going on since global cooling reversed itself in the 1980’s as not resulted in any discomfort or suffering to anyone at any point on the planet. If the planet as warmed perceptibly, it would have contributed to a longer growing season, milder weather, and less fossil fuel use, as most energy is used by humans to warm us. It is impossible to point a single human being or beast hurt, put out, harmed or discomfited, let alone killed, by climate change in the last half-century.
The second problem with the Global Warming Scare (and you thought I’d forgotten all about the second thing) is that like some sort of magic trick, we’ve been asked to look at one, unreal, problem while other issues are ignored or minimized. We have real threats that have killed real people. Recently, we have had the first terrorist attack on our soil since September 11, 2001. The attack on the Martyrs of Ft. Hood was more ominous in that the jihadist may have been not only home grown, but self-actualized. On a less critical note, we have our government’s treatment of the H1N1 flu “crisis”. For over a year our government knew about the approaching flu season, yet despite all the warning was not able to generate any more than 25% of the required vaccines in time. While “swine” flu may not be more deadly than seasonal strains, we see how an identified threat is inadequately dealt with.
It is time we begin to address real threats with real actions, and learn to think critically of phantoms and appeals to our insecurities as separate issues. The e-mails that have been revealed may have been “hacked”, but they might have been liberated by a concerned whistleblower. In any case, if this revelation stays the hand of further climate change nonsense, then we are in debt of whoever blew that whistle.
